Garde 12 foot skiff series
Brett Hobson 12/10/2005
The NSW 12ft Skiff Association is pleased
to announce details of an exciting new series to their racing
calendar, a new short course sprint series to be known as
the Garde 5000 12ft Skiff Series, in response to the growing
interest and resurgence of 12 footer sailing.
Well known as one of sailing’s most
spectacular boats, the 12 footer has a short hull length combined
with a huge sail area and are fast in any breeze, reaching
speeds in excess of 25 knots given the right conditions.
Many great sailors have come from the
class, such as Iain Murray, John Winning, Michael Spies (back
sailing one), Bruce Hewish and others.
In conjunction with the Sydney Flying
Squadron, the series, to be sailed on Sydney Harbour, is based
on a format whereby sailors will be competing in up to four
sprint races per day, on five different days of racing.
The action will be supported by a spectator
ferry which will leave from the SFS in Kirribilli.
Tight courses and ability of 12s to carry
any of their four-sail combinations will ensure fierce and
fast racing in any wind conditions and great viewing for spectators.
A significant cash prize pool for the
sailors will be guaranteed to ensure close racing and serious
action.
Garde Harbour Series – Dates:
Round 1 Sunday October 9th
Round 2 Sunday October 30th
Round 3 Sunday November 20th
Round 4 Sunday March 5th
Round 5 Sunday March 19th
The ferry will depart Sydney Flying Squadron,
76 McDougall Street, Kirribilli at approximately 1.30pm each
race day. All media and spectators welcome. Tickets available
from the SFS.
